“The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” -Alan Watts
The above quote was said by the great philosopher Alan Watts. The truth is, it doesn’t take a genius to understand this. This answer is clear as day but is hidden in plain sight to most people.
As he says, everyone is rushing around trying so very hard to achieve, to make money, to prove themselves, to get somewhere. But little do they know that most of it, in the end, is meaningless.
Working your life away, every day except weekends and a couple of weeks holiday. For what? You sacrifice all your time so you can have a bigger house, a better car? You are literally willing to slave your time away until you are 65 to have a bigger building to live in, or a nicer looking vehicle to drive in?
Here is the truth. You are born into this Earth with NOTHING, and you are going to leave this Earth with NOTHING.
Whether you are the richest man in the world or the poorest man, you will both leave with NOTHING. No matter how much material you have accumulated, you cannot take it with you. However, the one thing you can leave on this Earth when you say goodbye is a Legacy. It is not the money you had, but who you were that people will remember.
Returning to the quote at the beginning. The reality is that life is simple. We are here to simply live and to reproduce and to experience the joys that Mother Nature has given us. We all have been given a remarkable opportunity to enjoy the greatness of life.
Even though there is the obvious truth that you live and you die, people are still very willing to sacrifice this incredible opportunity by rushing around trying to reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You could waste your whole life chasing an illusion, an idea that has been advertised, marketed and sold to you; and then die realising it was all for nothing and you missed the true joys of life.
So understand that life is to simply live and to simply reproduce to continue your species. What you do between birth and death is up to you. Make sure it’s worth it. Don’t leave with regrets, leave in peace. While you’re here, remember “Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
